ℹ️ About Base Converter (Any Base 2-36)

Base Converter converts whole numbers between positional numeral systems from base 2 through base 36. In a positional system, each digit's value depends on its place: the rightmost digit is multiplied by base^0, the next by base^1, and so on. The base, also called the radix, is the number of distinct digit values available in that system.

Common uses:

  • Convert between binary, octal, decimal, and hexadecimal while debugging low-level data, bitmasks, memory addresses, or protocol fields.
  • Check Unix-style octal permissions, hexadecimal color channel values, and compact numeric IDs.
  • Generate base 36 representations for shorter human-readable identifiers that use digits and letters.
  • Learn the arithmetic behind base conversion with step-by-step place-value and repeated-division working.

Radix details: Bases 2-10 use only the digits 0 through 9. Bases 11-36 add letters after 9, so A is 10, B is 11, and Z is 35. Input is case-insensitive and normalized to uppercase output, but every digit must be valid for the selected input base.

How conversion works: The converter evaluates the input as a decimal value by summing each digit times a power of the source base, then emits the target base by repeated division and remainders. For example, 255 in decimal becomes FF in hexadecimal because 255 = 15 * 16 + 15. The same value is 11111111 in binary.

Examples:

  • 1010 base 2 = 10 base 10.
  • 777 base 8 = 511 base 10.
  • CAFE base 16 = 1100101011111110 base 2.
  • Z base 36 = 35 base 10.

Limitations: This is a numeric radix converter, not a byte encoder such as Base64. It accepts non-negative whole-number digits only; signs, prefixes such as 0x or 0b, decimal points, separators, and spaces inside the number are not part of the input syntax. Very large integers may exceed normal JavaScript numeric precision, so verify mission-critical arbitrary-precision values with a big-integer workflow.

Privacy note: The interactive page performs conversions in your browser after the tool code loads. If you use the public API example instead, the value is sent to the server for processing, so avoid submitting secrets or proprietary identifiers unless you intend to make an API request.
