Trip computed by converting distance to km and consumption to L/100km, multiplying to fuel litres, then converting into the price unit's volume before applying the price.
ℹ️ About Fuel Consumption Calculator
What is fuel consumption?
Fuel consumption (also called fuel economy) is the relationship between the volume of fuel a vehicle burns and the distance it travels. Two equivalent ways of expressing it are common: distance per volume (miles per gallon, kilometres per litre — bigger numbers are better) and volume per distance (litres per 100 km — smaller numbers are better). This tool converts cleanly between all four common units and then uses the result to cost out a trip in any of six common price unit + currency combinations.
Use cases
- Convert a US window-sticker mpg value into European L/100km.
- Compare US and UK mpg figures, which use different gallons.
- Convert km/L (used in Japan, India, and many Latin American markets) into mpg.
- Plan a road trip: enter the distance, your car's consumption, and the local pump price to get fuel volume and total cost.
- Cross-check a manufacturer's combined fuel-economy claim.
Conversion identities
-
US mpg ↔ L/100km:
l_per_100km = 235.2146 / mpg_us(and the reverse). The constant is(3.785411784 × 100) / 1.609344. -
UK mpg ↔ L/100km:
l_per_100km = 282.4809 / mpg_uk. The constant is(4.54609 × 100) / 1.609344. -
km/L ↔ L/100km:
km_per_l = 100 / l_per_100km. - US ↔ UK mpg is not a clean swap. A 30 mpg US car is roughly 36 mpg UK because the UK gallon is about 20% larger. This tool handles the two-step conversion through L/100km exactly.
Volume definitions
-
US gallon =
3.785411784 Lexactly (231 in³ — NIST SP 811 §B.8). -
UK (Imperial) gallon =
4.54609 Lexactly (UK Weights & Measures Act 1985). -
1 mile =
1.609344 kmexactly (international yard agreement, 1959).
Worked example — trip cost
Drive 400 km in a car that consumes 8 L/100km, with petrol at €1.50/L:
- Fuel needed: 400 × 8 ÷ 100 = 32 L.
- Cost: 32 × €1.50 = €48.00.
For a US example: 200 mi at 25 mpg (US) with $3.50/gal (US) needs 200 ÷ 25 = 8 US gallons and costs $28.00.
