ℹ️ About Text Column Tool
Text Column Tool works with columnar text such as CSV, TSV, pipe-delimited logs, and fixed-looking exports. Extract specific columns, align rows for readability, or inspect how a delimiter splits each line before importing data elsewhere.
Common use cases:
- Extract specific columns from CSV/TSV files
- Align text columns for better readability
- Analyze column structure and data distribution
- Convert between different delimited formats
- Clean up inconsistent column spacing
- Preview data structure before import
Operations:
- Extract column: Return one column number from each delimited row.
- Align columns: Pad cells to consistent widths so rows are easier to scan in monospaced text.
- Split analysis: Display how each row separates into fields and where column counts differ.
Supported delimiters: Comma, semicolon, tab, pipe, space, or any custom character.
CSV reference: Simple delimiter splitting is fast, but full CSV has quoted fields, escaped quotes, and embedded line breaks. For interoperable CSV behavior, compare your data against RFC 4180. If your next step is JSON output, RFC 8259 defines the JSON data format used by the related CSV to JSON tools.
Limitations: This tool is best for quick cleanup and inspection. Use a dedicated CSV parser before importing untrusted production data, especially when fields may contain delimiters inside quotes.
