ℹ️ About SVG Optimizer

SVG optimization reduces the size of Scalable Vector Graphics markup while preserving the rendered shape, color, and layout of the image. SVG is an XML-based W3C vector format for two-dimensional graphics; see the SVG 2 specification and the SVG 1.1 Recommendation for the core element, path, paint, text, and coordinate-system rules.

Use this SVG optimizer when you need to minify inline icons, compress exported logo files, clean up design-tool output, reduce sprite size, or prepare vector graphics for a web performance budget. A typical export from an editor may contain comments, editor metadata, redundant groups, long decimal coordinates, repeated default attributes, and whitespace that browsers do not need in production.

Common cleanup steps include:

  • Metadata removal: strip comments, XML declarations, DOCTYPE declarations, and empty text nodes when they are not required by the consuming pipeline.
  • Attribute minimization: remove default values, collapse repeated attributes, and keep only values that affect the final SVG rendering.
  • Path and geometry cleanup: shorten numeric coordinates, reduce decimal precision, and simplify path data carefully so icons and diagrams still align to the pixel grid.
  • Color compression: convert values such as #ffffff to #fff where equivalent, and preserve colors that are intentionally set through CSS variables or inherited styles.
  • Group simplification: remove unnecessary <g> wrappers when transforms, styles, masks, and clipping behavior remain unchanged.

Example: an exported icon might include <?xml ...?>, comments, nested empty groups, and path coordinates like 12.000000. A balanced optimization pass can remove the boilerplate, keep the viewBox, preserve accessibility labels such as <title> when needed, and round coordinates to a chosen precision.

Optimization is not the same as validation or sanitization. SVG can contain scripts, event attributes, links, external references, embedded images, filters, and animation. Treat untrusted SVG as active content, especially before upload, inline rendering, or use in an admin system. The OWASP File Upload Cheat Sheet and OWASP XSS Prevention Cheat Sheet are good starting points for server-side validation, safe content types, and output encoding.

For comparison with production-grade SVG minification pipelines, review the official SVGO preset-default documentation and SVGO plugin list. This page is useful for quick, visible SVG compression tests, but complex artwork with masks, filters, text layout, CSS selectors, or animation should be visually checked after every optimization pass.

Practical web-performance gains depend on the original file. Hand-authored SVGs may only shrink a little, while editor-exported artwork often saves more through whitespace removal, metadata cleanup, and number rounding. After optimization, test the SVG in the same context where it will be used: inline HTML, an <img> tag, CSS background-image, icon sprites, or a data URI can each expose different compatibility and security requirements.

Related workflows include converting the optimized SVG to a data URI for CSS, encoding it as Base64 for transport, building favicons, minifying adjacent HTML/CSS/JS assets, and checking the final byte size against a page-weight budget.
