Validation Mode: Enter a complete barcode to check if it's valid.
Generation Mode: Enter a partial barcode (without check digit) to calculate the correct check digit.
Supports EAN-8 (8 digits), UPC-A (12 digits), and EAN-13 (13 digits) formats.
ℹ️ About EAN/UPC Validator
EAN and UPC barcodes are retail product identifiers from the GS1 system. The number printed below an EAN/UPC symbol is usually a Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) plus a final check digit, so a quick checksum test can catch many mistyped catalog values, point-of-sale imports, marketplace feed errors, and barcode label mistakes before they reach production.
Supported formats:
- EAN-13 / GTIN-13: 13 numeric digits for most international retail trade items.
- EAN-8 / GTIN-8: 8 numeric digits for small packages where a full EAN-13 symbol is too large.
- UPC-A / GTIN-12: 12 numeric digits commonly used for North American retail products.
- UPC-E: 8 numeric digits that compress a zero-suppressed UPC-A value for smaller labels.
What the validator checks: The tool strips separators and spaces, detects the barcode type by length, calculates the expected check digit, compares it with the provided final digit, and shows the converted UPC-A value for UPC-E input. In generate mode, enter 7 digits for EAN-8, 11 digits for UPC-A, or 12 digits for EAN-13 to calculate the missing check digit.

Checksum details: GTIN-family check digits use a modulo-10 calculation with alternating 3 and 1 weights over the digits before the check digit. This is useful for detecting common entry and scanning errors, but it is not a cryptographic signature and does not prove that the product, brand owner, or catalog listing is legitimate.
Standards and sources: GS1 publishes the official check digit calculator, barcode standards guidance, and GS1 General Specifications. The EAN/UPC barcode symbology itself is specified by ISO/IEC 15420:2025.
Limitations: A valid checksum only means the number is internally well formed. This page does not assign GS1 prefixes, look up live product registrations, verify brand ownership, guarantee marketplace acceptance, or replace physical barcode verification. Prefix-derived country or region labels are allocation hints, not proof of manufacturing origin, and company-prefix lengths can vary, so manufacturer and product-code slices should be treated as helpful parsing output rather than authoritative registry data.
Privacy note: The interactive page validates codes in the browser with the bundled logic module. Values sent to the public API endpoint are processed server-side, so avoid submitting unreleased product identifiers if that is sensitive in your workflow.
