ℹ️ About ISBN Validator
ISBN Validator checks International Standard Book Numbers used for books, ebooks, audiobooks, and other separately available monographic publications. It accepts plain or hyphenated ISBN-10 and ISBN-13 values, verifies the check digit, normalizes formatting, and shows whether a legacy ISBN-10 can be converted to an ISBN-13 barcode number.
ISBN formats and parts
The current ISBN system is defined by ISO 2108:2017 and administered by the International ISBN Agency. ISBNs identify a specific product form and edition, so a paperback, EPUB, PDF, and audiobook can each need a separate identifier even when the title is the same.
ISBN-13
- Length: 13 digits, required for new ISBN assignments since 1 January 2007.
- Prefix: 978 or 979, followed by registration group, registrant, publication element, and check digit.
- Barcode use: compatible with EAN-13 / GTIN-13 retail barcode workflows.
- Example: 978-0-306-40615-7.
ISBN-10
- Length: 10 characters, used by older publications before the ISBN-13 transition.
- Final character: check digit 0-9 or X, where X represents the value 10.
- Conversion: most valid ISBN-10 values convert by prefixing 978 and recalculating the ISBN-13 check digit.
- Example: 0-306-40615-2.
Check digit behavior
- ISBN-10: validates when the weighted sum of all 10 characters, using weights 10 down to 1, is divisible by 11.
- ISBN-13: calculates the final digit from the first 12 digits with alternating weights of 1 and 3 so the total is divisible by 10.
- Hyphens and spaces: are presentation only; validation uses the numeric characters after cleanup.
- Common errors caught: mistyped digits, missing check digits, copied hyphens in the wrong place, and ISBN-13 values that do not start with 978 or 979.
Practical examples
| Input | Result | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 9780306406157 | Valid ISBN-13 | Normalize pasted catalog data to a readable hyphenated form. |
| 0-306-40615-2 | Valid ISBN-10 | Check legacy records and generate the 978 ISBN-13 equivalent. |
| 978-0-306-40615-8 | Invalid check digit | Find likely transcription errors before importing inventory. |
| 9780471384298 | ISBN-13 barcode value | Matches the GS1-style conversion from ISBN-10 0471384291. |
Useful validation workflows
- Library and archive imports: validate ISBN columns before loading MARC, CSV, or spreadsheet records.
- Publisher QA: confirm that title metadata, print files, and barcode artwork share the same identifier.
- Bookstore inventory: catch malformed ISBNs in supplier feeds, marketplace listings, and point-of-sale exports.
- Research and citations: normalize identifiers copied from catalogs, bibliographies, or scanned book covers.
- Batch cleanup: separate valid and invalid rows before sending records to a cataloging or product information system.
Limitations to know
- Mathematical validation is not assignment proof. A correct check digit does not prove that the ISBN exists, belongs to a publisher, or is assigned to the displayed title.
- Hyphenation depends on current range data. Registration group and registrant ranges can change; authoritative segmentation comes from the International ISBN Agency range message.
- ISBN-13 to ISBN-10 conversion is limited. 978-prefixed ISBN-13 values may have legacy ISBN-10 equivalents; 979-prefixed values generally do not.
- ISBNs identify editions and formats, not abstract works. Different product forms can legitimately have different ISBNs for the same title.
- No bibliographic lookup is performed. Use publisher, library, or ISBN agency records when you need title, author, or ownership verification.
