Decoding VIN information...
ℹ️ About VIN Decoder
VIN Decoder reads a 17-character Vehicle Identification Number and explains the manufacturer, model-year code, assembly plant, serial sequence, and check-digit status encoded in the VIN. Use it as an online VIN lookup, car VIN decoder, truck VIN decoder, motorcycle VIN checker, or batch Vehicle Identification Number validator when you need to confirm that a VIN has the right structure before deeper vehicle-history research.
Modern VINs follow the structure defined by ISO 3779, with the first section's World Manufacturer Identifier described by ISO 3780. U.S. VIN rules are published in 49 CFR Part 565, and NHTSA's vPIC platform explains that VIN decoding data comes from manufacturer submissions. For API comparisons and official field names, see the NHTSA vPIC Vehicle API.
VIN structure: WMI, VDS, VIS
World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI)
- Positions 1-3 identify the manufacturer or manufacturer type.
- Position 1 is the geographic region or country group.
- Position 2 helps identify the maker inside that region.
- Position 3 can identify the vehicle type, division, or small-manufacturer extension.
Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
- Positions 4-8 describe vehicle attributes selected by the manufacturer.
- Body, restraint, series, trim, engine, or drivetrain meanings vary by make.
- Position 9 is the check digit for VINs that use the North American validation formula.
- I, O, and Q are not valid VIN characters because they can be confused with 1 and 0.
Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS)
- Positions 10-17 identify model year, plant, and production sequence.
- Position 10 is the model-year code, not always the calendar build year.
- Position 11 is the assembly plant code when the manufacturer publishes one.
- Positions 12-17 are the vehicle's serial or sequence number.
VIN decode examples
Example: 1HGCM82633A004352
- 1HG is the WMI section.
- 3 at position 10 maps to the 2003/2033 model-year cycle.
- A at position 11 is the plant code.
- 004352 is the serial sequence.
Example: batch VIN check
Paste one VIN per line to validate fleet lists, auction exports, insurance records, or inventory spreadsheets before sending them to a paid vehicle-history or recall workflow.

Common WMI and manufacturer clues
North American Manufacturers
- 1G, 1N, 1F, 1C - common U.S. WMI prefixes used by GM, Nissan, Ford, and Chrysler families.
- 2F, 2G - Canadian-built vehicles for Ford or GM families.
- 3F, 3D - Mexican-built Ford or Chrysler-family examples.
- 4F, 4T - U.S.-built Mazda or Toyota examples.
- 5F, 5L - U.S.-built Honda or Lincoln examples.
International Manufacturers
- JM, JF, JH - Japan WMI prefixes for Mazda, Subaru, and Honda examples.
- KM, KN - South Korea WMI prefixes for Hyundai and Kia examples.
- WBA, WBS, WBX - Germany WMI prefixes associated with BMW examples.
- WVW, WP0 - Germany WMI prefixes associated with Volkswagen and Porsche examples.
- YV1 - Sweden WMI prefix associated with Volvo examples.
Model-year codes
The tenth character repeats on a 30-year cycle, so a VIN decoder may need the make, model, body style, or source database to distinguish, for example, 1980 from 2010 or 2023 from 2053.
Common VIN lookup workflows
- Used-car research - Compare a seller's VIN, model year, make, body class, and engine clues before ordering a paid report.
- Check-digit validation - Catch typos, copied characters, and impossible VINs before submitting paperwork.
- Fleet cleanup - Normalize VIN lists for maintenance, insurance, auction, or asset-management systems.
- Parts and compatibility - Extract make, year, plant, trim, and engine clues that help narrow catalog searches.
- Recall preparation - Confirm the VIN format before checking official recall or manufacturer service systems.
- Data imports - Validate VIN columns from CSV files, CRM exports, and vehicle inventory feeds.
Decoder features
- VIN format validation - Checks length, allowed characters, and 17-character VIN structure.
- Check-digit calculation - Validates position 9 where the VIN check digit is required.
- WMI decoding - Identifies manufacturer, region, and vehicle type where a prefix is known.
- Model-year detection - Converts the tenth character into its possible year-cycle values.
- Plant and serial extraction - Separates position 11 and the final six-character sequence.
- Batch mode - Lets you validate multiple VINs for spreadsheets, fleet records, and inventory lists.
Information the VIN may reveal
- Manufacturer and make - Brand, parent company, or manufacturer family when the WMI is known.
- Vehicle class - Passenger car, truck, bus, trailer, motorcycle, low-speed vehicle, or incomplete vehicle categories where available.
- Model year - Encoded year code from position 10, with cycle ambiguity noted.
- Body and restraint details - Manufacturer-specific fields that may describe body style, restraint type, doors, or gross vehicle weight class.
- Engine and drivetrain clues - Engine code, displacement, fuel type, drive type, or transmission where the source data supports it.
- Plant and serial number - Assembly plant code and production sequence for traceability.
VIN limitations and accuracy notes
⚠️ VIN Decoder Limitations
- Pre-1981 vehicles - Many older vehicles used shorter or manufacturer-specific identifiers, so a 17-character decoder may not apply.
- Model-year ambiguity - Year codes repeat every 30 years and may require make or vehicle context.
- Manufacturer encoding - Positions 4-8 and 11 are not globally universal; each manufacturer defines many of those values.
- Database coverage - Details depend on source data, manufacturer submissions, market, model year, and update timing.
- Not a vehicle-history report - A VIN decode does not prove title status, odometer history, accident history, liens, recalls, theft records, or ownership.
Privacy and safe use
- VINs are visible identifiers - A VIN is normally printed on the vehicle, but it can still be tied to a specific asset, sale listing, or insurance claim.
- Do not rely on VIN alone - Match the VIN on the dashboard, door label, title, registration, insurance documents, and seller paperwork.
- Watch for cloned VINs - A structurally valid VIN can still be copied from another vehicle.
- Server-side lookups may be logged - Treat VIN batches as operational data when checking fleet, auction, or customer records.
- Use official sources for final decisions - Confirm recalls, imports, title status, and safety matters through government or licensed data providers.
